Quick Facts on Mzuzu Airport Rehabilitation

Published on: July 1, 2025
1. *Rehabilitation and Extension*: The current works at Mzuzu Airport are aimed at rehabilitating and extending the existing runway, not constructing a new one. This upgrade will enhance the airport's safety and efficiency.
2. *Mzuzu Airport vs. Orton Chirwa International Airport*: The rehabilitation works are taking place at the existing Mzuzu Airport, not the proposed Orton Chirwa International Airport. Plans for the Orton Chirwa Airport are still in development. The upgraded Mzuzu Airport will pave the way for increased air traffic, creating demand for the future international airport.
3. *Aircraft Specifications*: The Q400 aircraft, expected to operate at Mzuzu Airport, requires a minimum runway length of 1,500m  and a width of 30m  with a pavement strength of PCN 20. It is also configured for a gravel runway hence why we have a composite runway at the moment. These specifications are met by the rehabilitated runway.
4. *Pavement Works*: The full scope of the project involves a final result of an overlay of the entire runway awaiting finances. While pavement works are ongoing, they will not disrupt flight operations. These works are part of the planned upgrades, and the airport will continue to receive flights during this phase. The completed works are awaiting re-licensing from the Civil Aviation Authority.
5. *Security Enhancements*: As part of our commitment to safety and security, we are also constructing a perimeter fence around the airport to enhance security measures and protect passengers, staff, and infrastructure.
6. *Fire services*
Fire services were upgraded from category 4 to 5 ideal for operations at Mzuzu Airport.
7. *Communication systems*
We are in the process of procuring upgraded navigation and communications systems for Mzuzu airport to beef up what we currently have at the airport. And some traffic controllers are attending a refresher course to enhance their skills on the same.
8. *Terminal building works*
Currently, we are working on demarcating  the already existing terminal building to separate arriving and departing passengers. Plans to construct a new terminal building are there and will be implemented in the future.
