Airport Developments Limited in Green Airport Initiatives

Published on: May 27, 2024

Airports serve as vital transportation hubs and provide several benefits to society and the economy. On the hind side, however, airports are significant contributors to the production of greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, they need to undertake interventions that mitigate the effects of these gasses.

Airport Developments Limited (ADL) is committed to the protection and sustainability of the environment. As part of its effort, the company conducted tree-planting exercises at Kamuzu International Airport and its surrounding areas. The remarkable corporate social responsibility activity was undertaken in collaboration with Press Trust Limited and FDH Bank.

A total of 9000 trees were planted, with 2000 of those trees being a contribution from Press Trust Limited and 500 from FDH. To ensure ownership and commitment from the people living within the Kamuzu International Airport catchment area, ADL mobilized communities surrounding the airport to be part of the initiative. The company also distributed part of the seedlings to them, in an attempt to promote community woodlots and forests.

In addition to mitigating the effects of airport gas emissions, the tree planting initiative also enhances the aesthetics of the area. ADL also plans to use the afforestation interventions for carbon financing, each tree planted is a tangible investment in a greener and more sustainable future.
